Law Day
The Winona CJCC's Community Outreach and Diversity Committee hosted the first "Winona County Law Day" at the Winona County Courthouse and Law Enforcement Center on May 2, 2011.  Because of the number of 6th graders in Winona County, the May 2nd event only included 6th grade student from the Winona Middle School.  However, other Winona County Schools have expressed interest in the event and a Fall Law Day will be held on September 28, 2011 for the rest of the 6th grade students in the County.

Winona County Law Day allowed area 6th graders to follow a law through enactment, enforcement and prosecution.  Students got to experience the enactment of a theft ordinance by the Winona County Board and the enforcement of the ordinance by the Winona Police Department (arrest of a student who took an iPod).  They then observed, in an interactive and real-life setting, how that case is handled in the criminal justice system.  Students heard from jail staff, prosecuting attorneys, court administration staff, defense attorneys and correctional officers about the purpose and function of each department/agency in the system.  They learned specifically how each department/agency would deal with the iPod theft case.  Students also got to participate in a mock trial involving student actors to determine the guilt or innocence of the individual charged with stealing the iPod.

Fall 2011 Law Day
The CJCC's Community Outreach and Diversity Committee will be hosting the Fall Law Day on September 28, 2011.  This even will be open to area 6th graders who did not have an opportunity to participate in the May 2, 2011 Law Day.  If your school is interested in attending Fall Law Day, please contact Kalene Engel by email, kalene@engellawoffice.com, or by phone 507-453-3646.
